Room 317, Sunday afternoon

Claudia's side of the room had been even more taken over with random electronics than usual. She was about halfway through putting together an intelligent light for the new theater director, and kept having to reign herself in from trying to make it too complicated. It was hard enough getting everything lined up in a reasonably compact casing without trying to throw in an excess of pattern storage. Turned out, manipulating light was kind of hard.

She'd probably welcome an interruption at this point, before her brain exploded.

"Is it my shirt? Am I wearing a bad shirt?"

"No! I just... I don't want it to be forced? If you're not in the mood, then you don't have to... Maybe we should go out or something," he was rambling, yes.

"Okay." She said that a little quickly. "That'd be cool. I mean. Going out, sometime . . . like a date?"

"Yeah, if you'd like," he nodded. "We could get something to eat, or go to the mainland. Dig around the junkyard. Something..."

Digging around the junkyard was romantic, right?

Well, it'd be fun, at least. "Yeah." Claudia smiled softly. "I'd like that."

Oh yeah, she was getting a stupid grin now.

"So which one would you like best?" he asked.

Good question. "Picnic at the junkyard?"

Jake laughed. If that's what you want, sure."

Claudia grinned. "Hey, you brought up the junkyard. You know me too well."

"Okay, I'll talk to the owner and see if he wouldn't mind," he promised. "Just don't blame me if the sandwiches get greasy."

"Please, half the time I'm covered in grease, anyway.'

"Just making sure it's out there," he held out his hand, grinning. He might be doing that for a while. "So you don't use it against me when you fill in your satisfaction poll."

Claudia laughed, taking his hand, then frowned. "Wait, people don't really give out satisfaction polls on dates, right?"

Look, she hadn't really done this before.

"I don't think so, but I can make one if you'd like," he offered, threading his fingers through hers.

"I think we'll probably be okay without it. Unless you're, like, dying to write up a poll."

"It'd have questions like: which part do you of your date did you like best?" he told her.

"Clearly the answer to which would be 'defeating the evil space robot'."

"I can dig that," he nodded, and because she hadn't been adverse earlier he leaned down to steal a kiss.

Ooo, kissing. Claudia could totally get used to this. She pulled away after a moment or two. "So, when should we have our date?"

That was so weird to say.

Kind of weird, yeah. Not badly so.

"I'd have to check with the owner, but how does next weekend sound?" he asked.

"Got no other plans." It wasn't like she had family around to come visit, right?

And it wasn't like his dad was going to brave an airport in his wheelchair. He hated travelling.

"Cool, so Saturday then? A date at the junkyard." Maybe if he said date enough, it'd make him stop feeling nervous.

"A romantic evening by the rusted out wrecks." Yeah, still sounded weird. This would take some getting used to.
