Room 317, Sunday afternoon

Claudia's side of the room had been even more taken over with random electronics than usual. She was about halfway through putting together an intelligent light for the new theater director, and kept having to reign herself in from trying to make it too complicated. It was hard enough getting everything lined up in a reasonably compact casing without trying to throw in an excess of pattern storage. Turned out, manipulating light was kind of hard.

She'd probably welcome an interruption at this point, before her brain exploded.

"So . . . you're not here to be pissed off at me. Good to know."

Claudia was kind of lost, here. Was he trying to talk about. . . . Well, he could just say it, right?

Apparently, he couldn't.

"Why would I be pissed off at you?" he asked instantly, using any excuse to get distracted. "No, I... Do you think it was a mistake?"

"What? I -- no! You're the one who brought up being pissed off."

"Not related to that!" he objected, and he was sucking a lot at this. "I liked that!"

Claudia wasn't exactly handling it well, either. "Yeah, well, so did I!"

No, they were well worth each other by now.

"Fine then!" he snorted as the stupidity of the situation caught up with him. "So you didn't mind?"

"Dude, I basically told you to, the second time."

"Right. I knew that," he did, just... Shhhhh. "So you wouldn't mind if it happened again?"

It was a different question. Honestly!

"What, like, right now?" They were handling this so well.

"Um..."

"Maybe."

"Is it my shirt? Am I wearing a bad shirt?"

"No! I just... I don't want it to be forced? If you're not in the mood, then you don't have to... Maybe we should go out or something," he was rambling, yes.

"Okay." She said that a little quickly. "That'd be cool. I mean. Going out, sometime . . . like a date?"

"Yeah, if you'd like," he nodded. "We could get something to eat, or go to the mainland. Dig around the junkyard. Something..."

Digging around the junkyard was romantic, right?

Well, it'd be fun, at least. "Yeah." Claudia smiled softly. "I'd like that."

Oh yeah, she was getting a stupid grin now.

"So which one would you like best?" he asked.

Good question. "Picnic at the junkyard?"

Jake laughed. If that's what you want, sure."

Claudia grinned. "Hey, you brought up the junkyard. You know me too well."

"Okay, I'll talk to the owner and see if he wouldn't mind," he promised. "Just don't blame me if the sandwiches get greasy."

"Please, half the time I'm covered in grease, anyway.'

"Just making sure it's out there," he held out his hand, grinning. He might be doing that for a while. "So you don't use it against me when you fill in your satisfaction poll."

Claudia laughed, taking his hand, then frowned. "Wait, people don't really give out satisfaction polls on dates, right?"

Look, she hadn't really done this before.

"I don't think so, but I can make one if you'd like," he offered, threading his fingers through hers.

"I think we'll probably be okay without it. Unless you're, like, dying to write up a poll."
